The 49th Billingham International Folklore Festival ends with a bang
THE 49th Billingham International Folklore Festival ended with fireworks yesterday. (Saturday, August 17).
Festival chairman, Joe Maloney, said the eight-day event went well with 280 dancers from across the world attending and between 25,000 and 30,000 members of the public enjoying the parades and other spectacles.
However, he said there was some disappointment that the number of dance troupes were down this year.
Mr Maloney said the organisers would be doing all they could to make next year a special year to mark the festival’s half century.
He said: “We’ll certainly be doing all we can, but it’s hard when dancers pull out due to visa or political problems. We lost three dance troupes this year and it rained on Saturday, which put a few people off. But overall it all went very well and we’ll really be pulling out all the stops for next year.”
The 49th festival ended with a parade on Billingham streets and a farewell gala event in the Festival Arena in the town centre. There was then a free firework display at John Whitehead Park.
