A SUPPORT group for people affected by lung conditions has received a £1,000 funding boost.
Breathe Easy Darlington has been awarded a grant by the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the company that operates the Enterprise car rental brand.
The group was set up in 2009 and has about 50 active members who attend monthly meetings, outings and exercise classes.
In its short life, the group has won two awards – firstly for outstanding new group in the Northern region in the British Lung Foundation’s (BLF) 2009/10 awards.
This was followed by a prize for outstanding contribution to BLF projects in 2011/12.
It is predicted that lung disease will be the third greatest killer in the UK by 2020.
A spokesman for Breathe Easy Darlington said: “Being unable to get one’s breath, coughing and gasping can be a very isolating, frightening and becomes a life-changing experience both for those directly affected by the disease and also for family or carers.
“Sufferers are often confined to the house, perhaps on oxygen or with not enough breath to move about as others would expect to.
“Breathe Easy groups assist with support, encouragement and information.
“There are online support resources, a pen pal scheme and access to the British Lung Foundation Direct, as well as the camaraderie of friends in the local group.
“In Darlington the group meets on a monthly basis to hear a wide variety of speakers, hold quizzes, social events and outings.
“We also provide weekly Keep Fit/Active sessions to assist patients keep mobile.
“This generous support allows us to know that our trips out in 2013 and 2014, for which the greatest cost is minibus hire, are funded adequately.
