Secrets of Minster stoneyard revealed
THE secrets of maintaining and conserving one of the country’s great cathedrals have been opened to all.
The stoneyard at York Minster threw its doors open to all today, August 9, so the public could see for themselves the work that the team of masons, carvers and carpenters carry out.
They were also able to meet the specialists, visit the on-site workshop and take guided tours of areas where restoration work is currently underway.
Next Friday, August 16, will see the Minster hold its annual stone auction, when people can buy stone removed during the restoration work.
Auctioneer Rod Cordingley, of Stephenson and Son, has donated his time to run the auction, which takes place noon in Dean’s Park, behind York Minster.
Previews of the stones included in the auction will take place on August 15 from 2pm to 4pm and August 16 from 10am to noon.
