Retro sweet shop proves a hit with online delivery service

SWEET-TOOTHED residents of a North-East town are enjoying treats delivered to their doors thanks to an enterprising sweet shop.
The Retro Sweet Shop, on Weir Street, Darlington, is one of just three sweet shops in the country which deliver via online delivery ordering service Just Eat - and the service is already proving a big hit.
The store, which opened in June, only began deliveries on Thursday but, thanks to advertising on social media sites such as Facebook, the orders have been flying in.
Owner Sannae Aljabory, 24, said: “I was really surprised by the response, it was a Thursday night but we had loads of orders.
“I’ve had to go to the wholesaler today and restock because we ran out of a lot of things. I’m very excited about the weekend.
“We have one driver but if the orders keep coming in like yesterday we will have to look at getting another one.”
The delivery service means that the team behind the shop - which is based in a business area of the town - do not have to worry about competition from sweet shops closer to the high street.
Ms Aljabory said: “My dad advised me to go on Just Eat because he runs a take-away and gets a lot of business from it.
“Takeaways have a lot of competition on there but we are the only sweet shop on it in the local area and one of just three in the country.”
The store started as a stall on Darlington Sunday People's Market offering traditional sweets.
Since moving to its permanent location and including American sweets on the menu, business has improved.
Ms Aljabory was inspired to set up the shop after developing a taste for American delicacies that saw her travel miles to indulge her sweet tooth.
She said: “I set up the shop because I really like American sweets and hated having to travel to Newcastle to get them.”
