Dog rescued as sixteen firefighters tackle Barnard Castle house blaze
SIXTEEN firefighters who tackled a blaze in a terraced house in Barnard Castle last night rescued the family's dog. (Thursday)
The fire at the property on Newgate, Barnard Castle, was reported at 11.16pm.
Two County Durham Fire and Rescue tenders from Barnard Castle were sent to the scene and found the property heavily smoke-logged.
Initially, there were fears that people might be inside, but after sending for another tender from Middleton-in-Teesdale, all people were accounted for.
While inside the firefighters discovered a Border Collie and were able to bring it out.
The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the property.
Earlier in the evening, crews from Darlington attended Five Arches Bridge to rescue another dog, this time trapped in the river.
