REDCAR’S £75m regeneration project provided the backdrop for the town’s second triathlon.

Dozens of athletes took part in the Redcar Sprint Triathlon which was won by James Wilson for Red Venom and Loftus Running Club.

Sunday’s race started at the 80ft Redcar Beacon before taking in the Palace Hub, a centre for creative industries, as well as the new promenade and sea defences.

Scores of spectators watched as competitors completed a 750m open water swim, followed by a 20k bike race and a 5k run.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Olwyn Peters, said: “This is the second year for the Redcar Sprint Triathlon and once again it was a fantastic event.

“We were unable to host it last year, while the regeneration work was taking place, but we are hoping the race will become an annual fixture for the town."

The triathlon was organised by TriHard Events Ltd and supported by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.
