It was hats off to the ladies at Thirsk and Ripon races when they went flat out to claim the prizes off the course in Ladies Day competitions.

At Thirsk, Champagne Tuesday was introduced to mark the first day of Royal Ascot with £1,000 worth of prizes on offer for the Best Ascot Hat.

Judith Beckett , from Chesterfield was judged overall winner, with Diane Lewis from Cumbria and Sue Swiers from Tockwith runners up.

Judith who was last years Go Racing in Yorkshire Best Dressed Lady Racegoer was presented with a £150 Adorn hat voucher, Swarovski jewellery and a DKNY watch from Market Cross Jewellers.

At Ripon Wendy Bennett from Kirkby Stephen won the ‘Best Dressed Lady’ competition in an outfit made entirely from recycled men’s clothing.

She caught the eye of the judges in a sleeveless jacket and skirt combination which had started life as several men’s suits.

The distinctive look was topped off with a 1920’s bowler hat. Her prizes included a gown to the value of £300, courtesy of Curvy Bridal as well as a cheque for £1500 from Ripon Racecourse.

She now goes forward to represent Ripon in the Grand Finale of‘Go Racing in Yorkshire Best Dressed Lady 2013.
