TRADERS said takings soared as shoppers responded to a call to support two markets.

Stall-holders in Thirsk and Northallerton said sales reported sales rise in excess of ten per cent over the last bank holiday weekend, while Love Your Market scheme organisers Hambleton District Council said long stay car parking numbers increased.

The scheme, to promote the markets, saw traders decorate their stalls with bunting, badges, and introduce special offers alongside street entertainment from musicians and dancers and treasure trails for youngsters.

Councillor John Noone, the council’s customer services chief, said: “We had the biggest Thirsk Monday market in a long time, the weather was kind to us and the traders embraced the campaign.

“Hambleton’s markets are an important part of the local economy and we will continue to work with traders to boost them.”

The council said it plans to repeat the scheme next year and will run another event to promote Northallerton’s market next month.
