A CHAMPAGNE evening raised almost £1,000 towards life-saving treatment for a girl who is battling a rare form of cancer.
Victoria Ameen-Ali and her father, Ian Ferguson, were so moved by the story of Fraja Simpson that they decided to hold a “Rip a Strip” charity waxing evening at their champagne bar, Crooners, in Houndgate Mews, Darlington.
The five-year-old’s family, from Leeming, in North Yorkshire, are trying to raise £500,000 to send her to the US for treatment after she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma with MYCN amplification - a nervous system tumour affecting fewer than 100 UK children a year.
The event, held on Monday (April 22), raised £942.50 for her cause and Ms Ameen-Ali hoped the night would encourage other businesses to host their own fundraising event.
As well as a charity raffle, hairy volunteers were also auctioned off, with winning bidders given the chance to rip the wax strips off.
