A SHARP-EYED youngster whose quick-thinking helped a police investigation into garage burglaries has been presented with an award.

Madeline Brown was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for County Durham, Ron Hogg, in recognition for her efforts.

The 12-year-old, who attends Hummersknott Academy, Darlington, was playing near her home when she noticed a garage door had been prised open.

Instead of ignoring it, the eagle-eyed youngster went home and told her parents, who alerted police and officers were able to quickly secure the property and investigate the crime.

As a result, Mr Hogg and the owner of the garage - borough councillor Cyndi Hughes - praised Madeline for her quick-thinking.

Coun Hughes said: "I am extremely grateful to Madeline for being observant and for taking action as a good neighbour.

“By recognising and celebrating her good deed I hope she will feel encouraged and proud. I hope that Madeline will act as a positive role model to other young people in Darlington.”

Madeline said she was out playing with friends when she noticed something wrong with the garage door.

“I had to tell someone,” she said. “I am proud of myself but I am sure anybody would have done the same.”

A bike was stolen during the break-in and enquiries are on-going.

Mr Hogg said: “It is vitally important for people to look out for the neighbours and report anything suspicious – the police couldn’t operate without the support from communities.

“It is great to see young people like Madeline who are taking that responsibility and looking out for their neighbours. I hope she will encourage other people to do the same.”

Mr Hogg also urged residents to secure their houses, sheds and garages and to lock windows when leaving homes unattended in the warmer summer months.

He said: “I hope that Madeline will be an inspiration for other people to look out for each other and to consider joining their local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

“We are also urging people to mark their property with Smartwater to deter criminals.”
