Lights off on Stockton bridges to promote environmental awareness
LIGHTS on three of Stockton’s town centre bridges will be switched off on Saturday for an hour to support a world-wide environmental awareness campaign.
Stockton Council is switching off the feature and decorative lights on the Infinity, Newport and Victoria Bridges as well as the decorative lights which run along the riverside between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday, March 23 to join the World Wide Fund for Nature’s Earth Hour.
The global campaign will see millions of residents and organisations across the world switch off non-essential lights for an hour to raise awareness about climate change.
Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor David Rose, said: "The council is supporting Earth Hour as a part of our ongoing commitment to reduce carbon emissions across the borough.
"We are striving to find effective ways of reducing energy demand such as installing photo-voltaic panels on council buildings in Stockton, Billingham and Thornaby and using electric vehicles for specialist and staff use.”
