Councils' £20m broadband scheme

EIGHT North-East councils are working together on a £20m project to extend broadband internet to rural areas.

Darlington, Durham, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool, Sunderland and Gateshead councils have together matched £9.88m given by the Government for the high-speed computer technology.

Don McLure, Durham’s corporate director of resources, said: “By working together the councils involved have been able to share expertise and ideas in order to support this important project.”

Durham deputy leader Alan Napier said: “This is an excellent example of strong partnership working between North-East councils being used to benefit local people.”

Work is due to begin on the ground in late spring.
