Gainford Parish Council ponders joint working with neighbouring groups

COUNCILLORS in a village are to consider working with neighbouring parishes.

Members of Gainford and Langton Parish Council agreed the move after clerk Martin Clark highlighted a presentation he had attended examining ways in which services could be provided in the future.

Mr Clark said the presentation, by Durham County Council, warned that budget pressures meant alternatives to how public services are provided in future had to be examined.

This included looking at which services could be provided by borough, town and parish councils working together.

“Members need to take stock and consider this,” he said.

Chairwoman Linda Britton said: “It could have major cost implications for us. I suggest we have talks with neighbouring councils such as Barforth and High Conniscliffe.”

Coun Andie Mackay, vice-chairman, said it would be a forward thinking move to starting talking to neighbouring parishes.
