A PROMINENT Tory MP has met with business leaders in Northallerton to discuss how his party can help with their aims.

Bob Neill, the vice-chairman of the Conservative Party for Local Government, met members of the newly-formed Northallerton Retail and Business Forum.

Forum member Marcus Grover said: "We met for ninety minutes and had a very useful exchange of views, setting out some achievable objectives.

“I know Mr Neill enjoyed his visit, and left with some of the insight garnered from our collective experience of hundreds of years doing business in our community.”

The discussion covered subjects including business rates on empty properties, rolling out the benefits of Mary Portas’ review to all town centres, local government lending, communication and social media, and giving Hambleton District more of a stake in the success of the high street.

The meeting was arranged by Coun Carl Les, deputy leader of North Yorkshire County Council, who said: "I’m grateful to Northallerton Retail and Business Forum for agreeing to meet with Bob, to discuss how local government and central government can work better with business – in this case small businesses in a market town.

“Such discussions will help to shape policy for the future at Westminster and at County Hall."
