Cambridge University academics visit Teesside School

ACADEMICS from Kings College, Cambridge will visit a Teesside school tomorrow, Monday, March 18.

The leading university men and women will talk to students aged 14 and 15 in their science class at St Peter’s College of Maths and Computing in South Bank, Middlesbrough.

FUN TIME: Redcar charity group Coffee Time Fundraisers will hold a family fun day complete with face painting and bouncy castle to raise money for the Grenfell Club which provides activities for people with special needs. Money raised will go to taking about 120 Grenfell Club members to York for the day. The fun day will take place on Saturday, March 30 at Redcar Cricket club from noon to 4pm Find out more at coffeetimefundraisers.co.uk.

SPRING FESTIVAL: RSPB Saltholme will hold a Spring Family Festival on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21. There will be fun trails and activities. For more information call the nature reserve, based between Billingham and Hartlepool, on 01642-546625.

Remind me, what is the average A-level grade breakdown for pupils at St Peter's College... Oh. that's right - the school finishes at GCSE. One feels sorry for the Cambridge academics forced to pander to the PC agenda of widening participation

Not at all. However, it would be more sensible for academics from Cambridge to go to a school where the pupils can actually apply to Cambridge.

So only the elite need apply,havn't you heard they are trying to encourage more applicants to Cambridge and Oxford from "working class" families thats probably what this visit is part of.

Only the academic elite should apply - yes. Apart from that the application process should be blind to class, wealth etc. However, is it not more sensible for the academics to go to schools that actually have sixth forms - given that it is within KS5 (ie. sixth form) that the process of university applications takes place? I see this as a waste of resources that could be put to better use by, for instance visiting sixth formers at Middlesbrough College.

It is more that they have to follow the whims of their political masters of all political hues. As for the future prospects of UK higher education - no there is not much hope - degrees are increasingly being dumbed down as the fees earned by foreign students encourage the passing of students who, quite simply, do not possess the basic skills needed to write at an advanced academic level.
