SHOPPERS were given a sweet surprise when Willy Wonka visited a Darlington shopping centre to raise funds for Comic Relief.

Staff from the Cornmill Centre, including centre manager Susan Young and members of the centre’s management, security and cleaning teams, dressed up as characters from the Roald Dahl classic to entertain shoppers and encourage them to donate.

The team raised £403 with a bucket collection and other fundraising events.

Ms Young, who donned Willy Wonka’s famous hat and coat, said: “We wanted to do our bit for Comic Relief and also saw it as an opportunity to do something fun as a team.

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of my favourite films and features some real comic characters, so we decided that dressing up as them for the day would entertain shoppers and encourage donations.

"We’re really grateful for the support we had throughout the day which resulted in a fantastic fundraising total for this worthwhile cause.”
