No independent candidates to contest Lascelles by-election

A BY-ELECTION to replace a popular councillor who died last year will be a three-way fight between the main political parties, it was confirmed on Friday (March 15).

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats will contest the seat in the Lascelles ward with Labour, who previously held the seat courtesy of the late Councillor Jackie Maddison.

Helen Crumbie is the Labour candidate, with Howard Jones nominated for the Lib Dems and Lewis Cairns for the Tories.

The nomination of the three hopefuls, which was confirmed by Darlington Borough Council on Friday (March 15), means there will be no independent or UKIP candidates standing.

Coun Maddison, who was instrumental in the success of Darlington’s annual carnival for more than 20 years, died in December after a short illness.

The by-election will be held on Thursday, April 11.
