Puppets help spread the message of road safety in County Durham
PUPILS from across County Durham have been learning important messages about road safety thanks to two hard-hitting drama projects.
Durham County Council’s road safety team has funded the sessions, in which two Theatre in Education companies – Tiny Giants and the Puppet Broadcasting Company – have visited secondary schools and colleges throughout the county.
The aim was to teach young people about road safety in an engaging and memorable way.
Tiny Giants' performance highlighted the devastating and tragic consequences of reckless driving.
The Puppet Broadcasting Company, meanwhile, used road shows, presentations, films and workshop training to spread the messages about a range of issues including using seat belts and the dangers of crossing the road while using headphones.
Alan Kennedy, road safety manager at Durham County Council, said: “These sessions were about making young people aware of the importance of staying safe on the roads and the dangers of taking risks while driving or being a passenger in a car or while crossing roads.
“The students really enjoyed the sessions and we hope that the knowledge they gained by taking part will help to keep them safe on the roads.”
