DANCE student Lauren Abel is flying the flag for Darlington in this year’s Miss Durham final.

The 22-year-old, of Hewitson Road, is happier playing football and wearing trainers than strutting around in posh frocks, but said that her unconventional approach to the beauty pageant seems to have served her well.

“I’m the complete opposite to the stereotypical image of someone who would take part in a beauty contest,” she said.

“When we all went to meet the organisers at Sedgefield Racecourse, I was the only one out of all the girls who turned up in trainers – the rest were all wearing high heels and dresses so I think I stood out a bit.

“I’m not a girly-girl at all, I thought I would enter just to see how far I would get being a bit more natural and different than what they are used to.”

Miss Abel is studying a BA Hons dance course at Teesside University and is planning fundraising events for ABF The Soldier’s Charity as part of her Miss Durham bid.

She is holding a collection in Darlington town centre on April 6 and is also looking for a local business to sponsor her in the competition.

Anybody who would like to contribute can email her at laurenabel55@msn.com.

The Miss Durham final takes place at Sedgefield Racecourse on May 25 and the winner will secure a place in the Miss England Grand Final held in Torquay on June 16.
