Awards to celebrate achievements of Darlington youngsters

AN awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of Darlington’s young people will take place on Wednesday (March 13).

The Vibe Awards will be held at Darlington Civic Theatre.

This year the awards, sponsored by Darlington Building Society, will honour young people who have taken the greatest steps forward to achieve against the odds.

There will be a focus on young people who may not normally attend award events, but have worked hard to change their lives and those around them.

This year there have been 216 nominations for the awards.

Awards will be presented to young people aged ten to 19. The categories are: Contribution to the wider community; Contribution to youth; Achievement against the odds in life; Achievement against the odds in sport; Achievement against the odds in arts; Achievement against the odds in learning 10-19 years.

The evening will also include performances by young people’s dance, theatre and singing groups.

There will be 103 young people performing from Dimensions Dance Academy; ArtsSpark; a band from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College called the Rations; Stagecoach; Redhall Dance Company and singers Charlotte Bradshaw, Sara Hird and Emily Whyborne.

Cyndi Hughes, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The Vibe awards are a great night and a chance to celebrate all the good work our young people do.

“These young people are a credit to themselves, their families, their schools and their community. Congratulations to all the nominees.”
