Airport bids to turn car park into caravan storage site

STORAGE PLANS: Durham Tees Vally Airport's long-stay car park STORAGE PLANS: Durham Tees Vally Airport's long-stay car park

A ONCE thriving airport that has seen passenger numbers plummet in recent years has applied to turn part of its long-stay car park into a storage area for caravans in a bid to generate income.

Durham Tees Valley Airport, near Darlington, welcomed almost a million passengers in 2006 but by last year that figure had dropped to less than 200,000.

The decline means that a large part of the airport’s long stay car park has become surplus to requirements, with a large section cordoned off and left unused.

The airport’s owner, Peel Holdings, has now applied to Darlington Borough Council to change a 1.7 hectare section of the car park - more than 900 spaces - into a storage area for caravans, motorhomes and other vehicles for the next three years.

Andy Foulds, commercial director for Durham Tees Valley Airport, said the company had to maximize all business opportunities for the site in order to keep it sustainable.

Anna Simcock, a development officer working for Peel Holdings, noted in a report to planners that the car park is ‘under-utilised’ and “provides a substantial amount of car parking spaces than are currently required for the operation of the airport at present.”

She added: “This proposal responds to the current needs of the airport business, diversifying to create additional revenues in the challenging economic circumstances.

“A temporary permission is being sought to allow flexibility for when airport visitor numbers increase, enabling this area of the car park to be reinstated to its original use. It is difficult to predict when visitor numbers will increase.”

The caravan storage would be run by an outside company and would have space for up to 350 vehicles, in an area that is already protected by fencing and airport security.

In a statement, Mr Foulds said: “Maximising business opportunities for the whole site is important to sustain the airport.

“In this instance we were approached by an organisation which offers storage facilities for vehicles, including mobile homes, seeking temporary use of a section of our car parking area which is some distance from the terminal and is actually cordoned off at present.

“If the application is approved it will enable us generate income from an asset which is currently under-used.”

Useless councils should get off their backsides and force the scum who blight residential streets and estates with illegally parked caravans to move them to the airport or face having them crushed. This would be a double win for residents and Peel. Only losers would be scumbags.

They'll need to provide security around the clock and CCTV all of which will cost. There is also the possibility that the air traffic improves and then they'll have to phone everyone to move their caravans.

Highly unlikely the fortunes of Durham Tees Valley airport will improve Spy Boy, they have lost the plot and are tail-spinning out of control. They charge a fee to all customers for the privilege of walking through the departure lounge, whether you use any facilities there or not. That has proved highly unpopular and reeks of greed and desperation on the part of the airport owner. DTV’s regular routes with KLM to Schiphol are Eastern Airways to Aberdeen are under-used. That's because you can fly the same route £100 cheaper from Newcastle Airport. I live much closer to DTV than Newcastle airport, but always fly from Newcastle due to significantly lower fares and much better lounge facilities without the ‘access charge’.

Peel Airports don't give a flying **** (excuse the pun) about the airport anymore. All that land....surely the whole place could be put to better use. I live beside it, and can honestly say I see more Great North Air Ambulance helicopters flying over my house than I do any passenger jets.

Peel Plc only ever wanted the land. Have a look at Pprune under the Airports section as people in the know have been commentating for years about Peels plans.
If they are asking for this caravan fiasco to be given council permission for at least 3 years, does that mean that they cant see any new airlines arriving?

Peel only paid £500,000 for the airport land and now estimate in their accounts that it is worth £30 million for the land alone!

Turn the site into a musuem, there are still a lot of the original wartime buildings left which should be preserved. If properly managed it would be the best thing for the place, as it stands now its falling into disrepair and will only get worse.
