Artist Tania Kovats to lead God's Bridge landscape project in Teesdale
AN internationally renowned artist is coming to County Durham to lead an ambitious project centered on a unique geological feature in Teesdale.
Tania Kovats will be walking to the God's Bridge limestone formation on the River Greta, near Bowes, in the company of 10 artists who are being challenged to come up with work inspired by the location.
Applications are now being invited from artists wishing to take part – with interest already expressed by from as far away as Cornwall and Somerset.
The God's Bridge project is part of Artscapes, a series of seven landscape-based initiatives aimed at practising artists both locally and nationwide.
They are being organised by ARTworks in Teesdale, whose co-manager Judy Caplin said it was something of a coup to secure Tania Kovats' involvement.
“It is right up her street – she is interested in unique geological structures.”
Despite national interest in the God's Bridge project, Mrs Caplin said the idea was to give local artists the chance to take part.
“We are so far from any art colleges, it is so difficult to access support and mentoring,” she said.
“Having an artist of Tania's calibre on hand to discuss and mentor the creative process is a fantastic opportunity for any artist.”
The project includes a guided walk to God’s Bridge from Bowes, plus discussions and talks with the artists and a local geologist.
The artists have five months to come up with their pieces and the finished work, which will be exhibited next year at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, as well as elsewhere across the region.
More information is available at www.artworksinteesdale.org or from Mrs Caplin on 01833-640077. The deadline for applications is March 25.
