Scrutiny committee to ponder Darlington golf club takeover decision

THE controversial decision to merge two neighbouring golf clubs in a North-East town will be scrutinised at a meeting next week.

Darlington Borough Council cabinet last month agreed to sell public-owned Stressholme Golf Course to privately-run Blackwell Grange Golf Club.

The deal, which involved the sale of Stressholme to Blackwell for £750,000, could pave the way for a future executive housing development on land currently occupied by part of the private club.

Opposition councillors on the Labour-led authority have ‘called-in’ the decision for scrutiny.

Conservative councillor Alan Coultas signed the call-in papers, which read: “The reason I have requested the call-in is that we believe that the decision of cabinet should be the subject of further scrutiny.

“The cabinet report refers to the terms for the sale of Stressholme Golf Course and we would like the freehold value of this land to be the subject of scrutiny by the efficiency and resources scrutiny committee.”

The committee meets at 4pm on Tuesday (March 12), at Darlington town hall.

It should be sold for the MARKET VALUE and not on a nod and a wink put it out to tender for the good of the borough and the people of Darlington
