Barnard Castle Town Council broadly supportive of plans for 75 houses next to Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution

TOWN councillors in Barnard Castle have raised a number of concerns about plans to build up to 75 homes on land next to the Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution.

The Ministry of Justice has submitted an outline planning application to Durham County Council three years after after first suggesting the triangle of land between the institution and Startforth Park could be sold off for development.

At their meeting on Monday, members of Barnard Castle Town Council said they broadly agreed with the plans.

However, a number of issues were raised.

Members asked for greater clarity on how buses would serve the new estate.

They also said the scheme should include more bungalows and a larger proportion of affordable houses on the site rather than money set aside for them to be built elsewhere.

Councillors also said the impact of the scheme on services such as shopping and GP surgeries also needed to be recognised.
