CATERING student Man Thapa withstood the heat of competition to take an inter-college cook-off in style.

The Darlington College student wowed judges with his pan-fried sea bass to win the elimination round of a North-East college cookery competition against New College Durham.

Originally from Nepal, Man, 20, now lives in Darlington and is studying catering at the college.

Contestants had an hour to produce two portions of a main course fish dish. Also taking part were fellow Darlington College student Holly Brown, 17, of Newton Aycliffe and New College Durham students Kathy Wadge, 18, of West Rainton and Hannah Brown, 18, of Hetton-le-Hole.

Judge Duncan Mills, a curriculum area leader at Darlington College, had to judge the food without knowing who had cooked each particular dish.

He said: “They were all fantastic and to an amazingly high standard. I would have been happy paying for any of them in a restaurant.”

Man, who would like to be head chef in a top hotel one day, added: “I have always enjoyed cooking and cook for my mother and father, particularly Nepalese curry.”

Eight colleges are involved in the competition including Gateshead and Middlesbrough and the final will be staged at the latter later this year.
