NURSERY school children were given a taste of the Orient in Darlington this week.

Tots from Darlington College’s Childcare Centre explored Chinese customs and traditions as part of a multi-cultural event designed to introduce them to different cultures and ways of life.

The children, from babies to five-year-olds, dressed up in Chinese costumes to enjoy role playing sessions and sampled traditional Chinese food with the use of chopsticks.

They also made lanterns and explored Oriental superstitions, banging on woks to scare away evil spirits.

Centre manager Andi Cartwright said: “We try to give the children a taste of what is happening around the world and expose them to other cultures. They really liked making Chinese lanterns and setting up an Oriental display which could also be enjoyed by parents.”
