Darlington MP backs volunteerism project

DARLINGTON MP Jenny Chapman has expressed her pride at a project that aims to increase volunteering in the town.

Launched last year, the Darlington Cares project brings together public and private sector employers who encourage their staff to take part in volunteering and social responsibility.

Mrs Chapman visited Teesside University’s Darlington campus on Friday (March 1) to hear more about the project and its objectives.

She is planning to write to the organisations involved praising the way they have come together to support the initiative.

Mrs Chapman said: “This is a really important initiative, which brings a lot of people together in an effort to improve the community.

“The Cares movement is still in its infancy and I am going to write to thank people for their support in getting behind it.

“At times like these, everybody is trying to do more for less, which is why a project like As well as the university, other organisations supporting the project include Darlington Borough Council, Cummins, Lingfield Point owners Marchday, the NHS, Sherwoods and Newsquest, the company which published The Northern Echo.

It's a good thing when companies can do this sort of thing. I have been involved in a number of such projects. Some people may try and take advantage of this work though, so keep an eye open for abuse of the system. The people who get involved in these community projects should not be expected to take up the slack caused by bad government and council cuts.
