TALENTED netballer Fiona Dewar is flying the flag for Darlington after being selected for an elite national squad.

Fiona, a first year student at Darlington's Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, successfully completed regional and national trials to earn her place on the 20-strong British Colleges’ Sport Elite Netball Squad.

The squad plays against college teams from other nations and university teams and will go on an end of season European tour in the summer.

Fiona said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to have won a place in the Elite Squad.

“It was a long trialling process and it is good to be rewarded.

“The standard is very high and I am pleased that my hard work has paid off.”

Paul Carroll, sports development co-ordinator at QE, added: “Fiona has had a great year, progressing from college and club netball through to the National Colleges’ Squad.

“She is a credit to QE, her family and herself.”

Fiona is studying AS Level biology, chemistry, French, geography and critical thinking at QE and hopes to go on to university to do a science degree.
