NURSERY children watched with glee as their garden was given a make-over today (Tuesday February 26).

A team of volunteers from The Prince’s Trust are spending the week transforming the garden at Darlington’s Borough Road Nursery as part of a community project.

The revamped garden will feature a mini-beast area as well as new seating made from tree logs.

Headteacher Lynn Millar thanked the Prince’s Trust and said: “It is wonderful, the volunteers have done a lovely job, digging and planting and creating things. It is just lovely. The children have been really excited as they have been able to watch and have even been given little jobs to do. It is great for the future of the school.”

The team of 14 volunteers chose to revamp the garden as part of a 12-week course designed to get 16 to 25-year-olds back into employment, education or training.

Project leader Martin Copley said it was a valuable experience for the group. He said: “It is all about working in the community and with others. On a personal level, it also teaches them new skills and gives them a sense of achievement being able to see something through from start to finish.

"They are contributing to the community and doing something good. It allows them to start using their initiative more and inspires them to be self motivated.”

Volunteer Bobby Spence, 19, said: “It has been really good. We’ve been growing as a team and the nursery is benefiting too. I wanted to get involved because it’s a really good cause.”
