TENS of thousands of new bus passes are being despatched by the North-East’s biggest council.
Durham County Council began sending out 80,000 new concessionary bus passes on Monday (February 18).
Passes which were issued when the concessionary scheme began five years ago are about to expire.
The new passes will last another five years.
If pass holders have moved house or their personal details have changed, they should call the council’s bus pass hotline on 03000-268-667.
If you are eligible for a pass and one has not arrived by March 18, also call the number above.
Under the English National Concessionary Bus Travel Scheme, the council issues passes to people over 60 or with certain disabilities – allowing them free or discounted travel on local bus services.
In County Durham, pass holders can also get half-price travel on some local train services.

I disagree - not all eligible persons are alcoholics, druggies and bluffers. There are old people for example, who can get around without having to use a car. This may encourage elderly people to give up driving as else we end up with an increasing number of incidents with elderly motorists who really should not be behind the steering wheel any more. Taking the bus at no cost will help towards the decision to give up driving at old age.
