WORK is under way to convert the former JJB sports store, in East Street, Darlington, into a branch of Sports Direct. Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley’s firm bought 20 JJB branches after it went into administration. No one from Sports Direct was available for comment and it is unclear what the development means for its store in the town’s Cornmill Shopping Centre.

FITNESS CLASSES: Boxing and self-defence classes for children aged eight to 13 are being offered by Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts Academy, at The Northern Echo Arena, in Neasham Raod, Darlington, from 5.15pm to 6.15pm, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Admission is £4 per class.
