A MOTHER and daughter are said to be “poorly but stable” after being knocked down by a car on a pedestrian crossing.

They were hit on a pelican crossing near Darlington College on Catterick Road, Catterick Garrison, at about 6pm on Saturday (February 16).

The 40-year-old woman and six-year-old girl, who live locally, were crossing the road with a group of other people when they were in collision with a blue VW Polo.

The woman suffered serious head injuries and her daughter sustained injuries to her face.

They were taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough following initial treatment at the scene by paramedics – and the road was closed for more than four hours while police investigated the circumstances of the incident.

The woman’s condition is described as “poorly but stable” and the girl is stable following treatment.

A local woman aged in her 60s was driving the car. She was arrested in connection with the incident and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who recalls seeing a blue VW Polo in the area prior to the collision on Saturday evening to come forward.
