GYM lovers are invited along to test some new outdoor fitness equipment in a Darlington park this weekend.

People can try out the equipment in South Park from 10am to 1pm on Saturday (February 16).

A decision on whether to install outdoor equipment on a permanent basis will be made late in the year.

The venture is the brainchild of the Friends of South Park and Darlington Borough Council’s Park Ranger team.

It is anticipated that the equipment will be an outdoor alternative to exercising in an indoor gym, attracting people who prefer to carry out their exercise in a greener setting.

Funding has come from the Friends of South Park through the Dulverton Trust.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and environment, said: “The idea of outdoor gyms is catching on around the country and we are keen to offer this facility to park users.

“Anything that encourages people to get out in the fresh air, exercise and use our parks is to be welcomed.

“I urge anyone to come along and have a go this weekend and let us know what they think.

“I would like to thank the Friends of South Park for their help with this project and for their help over the years in making South Park the well loved and well-used park that it is today.”

John Throw, chairman of the Friends of South Park, said: “We have worked with the council to set up this trial and welcome everyone to come along.

“We will be handing out leaflets asking people what they think and will be using this information before we make the final decision on the equipment.”

Anyone interested is asked to meet at the Education Centre in South Park.
