POLICE chief and former Solicitor General Vera Baird will headline an event aimed at ending abuse against women this Valentine’s Day.

The Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and former Redcar MP will speak at a One Billion Rising event in Durham Market Place at 1pm on Thursday (February 14).

The event is part of a global campaign to end violence against women.

It will also feature Durham University academic and activist Nicole Westmarland, dancing, poetry and music.

Ms Baird said: “I’m delighted to give my support to Durham’s One Billion Rising event.

“If we all stand together, we can look back at 2013 as being the year that everyone came together to seriously end violence against women and girls in Britain and across the world.”

Ms Baird will also address a One Billion Rising event at the Monument, in Newcastle, on at 4.30pm the same day.
