A FORMER Church of England bishop who converted to Catholicism welcomed two new members to the local congregation of ex-Anglicans during a visit to Teesdale.

Monsignor Keith Newton, former Bishop of Richborough, in Kent, now holds the title of Ordinary with the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, whose Darlington group is based at St Osmund's Church, Gainford.

The Ordinariate is the Catholic body into which former Anglicans are received when they convert.

Mgr Newton was hosted by resident priest at St Osmund's, Father Ian Grieves, and during a busy programme of events, he welcomed John and Ruth Evans to the Ordinariate.

They were the first two converts since 58 ex-Anglicans switched to Catholicism to form the Darlington group of Ordinariate last year.
