BOMB disposal experts have been called to a house in Darlington this afternoon after workmen discovered an unexploded shell.

Police were called to the property on Belvedere Road, between Clifton Road and Park Lane, at 3.45pm after two men who were dismantling a shed found a shell lying beneath it.

Officers cleared the area and asked residents to stay indoors while the bomb disposal unit from Catterick Garrison were called.

The experts quickly established that it was inert and posed no danger.

Acting Insprctor Andy Reeves, from Durham Police, said: "There was no risk to the public and no danger at any time. Officers were quickly on the scene and asked people to remain indoors.

"It was clearly a shell in the ground which caused a bit of concern but it was quickly resolved."
