Chinese New Year celebrations planned for Darlington

A SERIES of celebrations to welcome the Chinese New Year will be held in Darlington town centre on Monday (February 11).

Students from Hummersknott Academy will perform a traditional dragon dance in Joseph Pease Place at 1pm, and Polam Hall pupils will write calligraphy New Year’s messages for visitors to their market stall.

Jenny Wong, subject leader for Mandarin at Hummersknott Academy, said “We want to wish everyone in Darlington a happy Chinese New Year “2013 is the Year of the Snake. The snake, also called Junior Dragon by Chinese people, is the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac, which is made up of 12 animal signs.”

Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and local environment, said: “There are lots of opportunities in Darlington for people to get creative and join in the arts. I am delighted that the spectacle of Chinese New Year is once again coming to the town and I hope lots of people will come out to support the pupils and join in the celebrations.”
