New owners save Gainford village shop
A VILLAGE store has been saved from closure after buyers stepped in at the eleventh hour.
Last week, a notice was placed in the window of the shop in Gainford, near Barnard Castle, blaming the downfall in the retail sector for its imminent closure.
The news caused great concern to residents and members of Gainford and Langton Parish Council who were worried it would have a negative impact on the community, especially older people who rely on the shop for everyday goods such as milk, bread and newspapers.
The shop was due to close today (Friday, February 7), however The Northern Echo understands new owners have been found.
A member of staff at the store said it would close at noon today and reopen on Monday (February 11).
When it was feared the shop would close, F Simpson and Son family butchers on High Green, Gainford, stepped in to ensure villagers could still buy essentials on their doorstep so it now stocks milk and sells The Northern Echo.
