NEW FREEMEN: York has 69 new hereditary freemen after the Lord Mayor, Coun Keith Hyman presided over a meeting of the Freedom Court at the city’s Guildhall. They were all born into families whose members can claim the honour. There are now an estimated 5,000 Freemen of the City of York, most of whom do not live in the city.
BIG BRASS: More than 550 tuba players from all over the British Isles will converge on York Racecourse on June 30 an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest tuba ensemble. The current record stands at 502 participants playing Christmas carols at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 2007.
