CONTESTANTS are being sought to enjoy some flipping fun in Northallerton’s annual pancake race.

Food firm Lewis and Cooper has challenged fellow traders to take part in the event on Shrove Tuesday – February 12.

The event is being supported by the town council, the district Rotary club and the town’s newly-formed Retail and Business Forum.

Flipping a pancake all the way, runners will attempt to stay on a course on the town’s Applegarth playing field. Money raised will go to the Great North Air Ambulance.

Last year Stas Struzanovs of local company Bag2School, took the trophy for the second year running in the adults’ race, which followed heats run by pupils from nearby Applegarth School.

This year’s event will once again pit pupils against each other, with the fun starting at 11am. Spectators are welcome.

The race covers just over 50m – equivalent to the distance between the town hall and market cross, where the race used to be run in years gone by. It was restored to the town's calendar by Lewis and Cooper in 2010.

Entrants for the main race can turn up on the day – fancy dress is encouraged – in return for a donation of at least £2.50.
