New refuse fleet takes to the road as shared services come to an end

A NEW fleet of refuse trucks has taken to the roads of Richmondshire as the district council re-establishes its own service to local communities.

They will help cover the deeply rural territory, while also serving Richmond, Leyburn, and Hawes and the largest military establishment in Western Europe - Catterick Garrison.

The five new wagons replace vehicles that had reached the end of their useful life - maintenance costs were escalating and breakdowns were seeing them miss more and more time on the road.

They have all been all fitted with efficiency driving aids which can save fuel and vehicle tracking to help check where bins have been missed and prevent disputes.

A system of CCTV cameras ensures the safety of the crew and an on board weighing cell will make sure the trucks are never overloaded.

The move comes as Richmondshire dismantles its shared refuse service with neighbouring Hambleton – the two authorities have agreed that from early summer they will each concentrate on their own service.

“Richmondshire has always enjoyed a ‘5 star’ refuse service,” said council leader John Blackie.

“We have outstanding customer satisfaction ratings thanks to the first class dedication, commitment and hard work shown by our front line staff on the bin wagons and supported by a really good back up team at our depot.

“We are looking forward to being a stand-alone service again, and these fabulous new refuse trucks will ensure our reputation for excellent service will be maintained.”
