A NORTH-East family butcher is celebrating after winning 14 awards at a annual pork competition.

William Peat Butchers, in Barnard Castle, achieved its best ever results at the regional BPEX annual awards, which focuses on the quality of pork products.

David Higginson, who has been helping his father Jim run the shop for the last seven months, said he was proud of not only his own achievements, but those of his family.

His mum Lynne had entered a black pudding and one of his sisters, who works on the delicatessen, submitted a pate for the competition. His other sister Emma works in the bakery.

“We have entered for a number of years and have won things but we have never entered 14 categories,” he said. “This is the most success we have ever had at these awards. We did so well, I am so pleased.”

The family hope to achieve a similar level of success next year but first they hope to do well at the Great Taste Awards, in London.
