Working hard to keep the elderly warm

STAFF and volunteers at a Darlington charity are working hard to keep elderly people as warm as possible this winter.

Age UK, working in partnership with Darlington Borough Council and other voluntary organisations, has been awarded a grant from the Government’s ‘Warm Homes, Healthy People’ fund.

The grant is to be used over the coming months to keep disabled and vulnerable older people safe, warm and healthy within their own homes.

Assistance will be available in a variety of formats including Warm Home Advice.

An event will be held on Thursday, February 14, from 2pm to 4pm, at Cockerton Library, to provide older people with Cold Crisis response packs.

The packs include a hot water bottle, blanket, scarf, hat, gloves, socks, and hand warmers to help with the cold weather during the winter months.

Packs are limited and anyone who knows of a vulnerable, older neighbour or relative are invited to come along and collect a pack.

Meanwhile, Age UK is selling pin-on ‘bobble’ badges to promote the ‘Winter Warmth’ and ‘Warm-up Britain’ campaign, which has its national day on Thursday (February 7).

The charity is trying to raise funds for isolated older people, who often struggle in the cold weather.
