Darlington police warning over fake banknotes

BUSINESS owners are being urged to be vigilant following reports of counterfeit money in circulation.

Police officers in Darlington are investigating after a number of counterfeit £20 notes were reported in the town.

Sergeant Andy Jackson said several of the notes had filtered into shops and urged shop owners and members of the public to be on the lookout for the money.

He said: “We are still investigating at the moment and following a number of lines of enquiry to find out where they are coming from.

“If anybody thinks they have come into contact with counterfeit money, we are urging them to let the police know.”

The notes are said to be smaller than a normal £20 note, more blue than purple, and printed on softer paper.

Anybody who suspects they have been handed a fake note is asked to contact Durham Police on the non-emergency 101 number.
