Councillors to discuss plans for wheelie bin introduction
4:44pm Thursday 31st January 2013 in News
SENIOR councillors will look at how preparations for the introduction of wheelie bins to Darlington are going, ahead of a roll out in June.
Members of Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet will consider a report prepared by the council’s scrutiny committee, who were asked to look at ways to make the new system work smoothly and with as few interruptions for residents as possible.
The decision to introduce wheelie bins was made last year and has sparked a mixed reaction from residents – some feel they are a waste of time and money, while others have welcomed the move as a way of cleaning up the streets.
The report prepared by the scrutiny committee sets out a number of points for consideration by cabinet, including an anticipated rise in the number of requests for assisted collection and the need for officers to visit each resident to make a full assessment; concerns from residents about storage and special arrangements for houses of multiple occupation.
The council has committed to giving residents as much information as they need about wheelie bins before they are delivered, including displays of bins at local supermarkets to help people get used to their size.
Cabinet will meet on Tuesday, February 5, at 5pm, in the town hall.
