VISUAL reminders of the growth of region’s industrial past have gone under the hammer at a North-East auction house.

Two albums of photographs documenting the construction of Teesside’s Nylon Works in 1950 were sold at Anderson and Garland along with a sample of pellets from the factory.

Engineer Mike Satow spent years capturing the images of the process plant during the late 40s and 50s where he played a key part in the company’s development.

Yesterday, (Wednesday, January 30) the lot sold for £100 at the Newcastle auction house.

Mr Satow’s daughter, Clare, said: “My father moved up to be part of the ICI team that built the Nylon Works in 1947 and gathered this collection of images and pellets as time went on. He stayed at the Works until 1956 when he was transferred by ICI to India, with the family following a year later.

“My father was very public spirited and came back to the North-East on his retirement with the aim of celebrating the region’s industrial heritage. He actually built the replica of the Locomotion housed at Beamish with the volunteers involved with setting up the museum, a fact of which we’re very proud.

“The family and I would love it if this rather special lot was picked up by an enthusiast of Teesside’s industrial past as it would be nice to think the albums are with someone who will enjoy them.”
