A KEEN cyclist is taking on the challenge of the Tour de France – without leaving Middlesbrough.
Steven King is taking on his long distance challenge at Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit after he came across a notice board asking, “Where will your bike take you?”
The boards provided information on routes from the cycle circuit to Redcar and beyond, Captain Cook’s travels and speciality routes such as John O’Groats to Lands End and America’s Route 66.
Inspired by these more ambitious routes, he decided to set himself a benchmark - to cycle to Easter Island, the equivalent of 13,589km in laps of the cycle circuit, by Easter 2014.
To help him along the way, staff at the circuit set him the challenge to complete the ‘Bradley Wiggins 2012 Tour de France’ before the next winner of the tour is crowned on July 21.
To complete this 3,497km section of the challenge on target, he will have to undertake 130 laps of the circuit each week for the next 27 weeks.
The cycle circuit is encouraging people to take up the Tour de France challenge with Mr King, either on their own or as part of a group. Interested parties should contact the cycle circuit on 07876-137592.
