A DECISION by Rotary Club bosses to invest £5,000 with Darlington Credit Union was discussed at a recent meeting.
Ken Young, senior vice president of Darlington Rotary Club, told members the decision was made by Rotary Council in support of the credit union’s efforts to provide affordable loans as an alternative to high-interest loan sharks.
At an earlier meeting, Darlington MP Jenny Chapman had spoken of her fight against the very high interest charged by some loan companies.
The speaker at last week’s meeting was retired teacher Clair Maddison, a volunteer with the Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust.
She gave an illustrated account of her visits to Lourdes with groups of children.
The trust takes 2,000 children each year to the place of pilgrimage in southern France and a Darlington branch of the trust was recently formed.
