A CEREMONY to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz will take place in Darlington next week.

The town will honour Holocaust Memorial Day, held annually to mark the day when Allied Forces reached the concentration camp on January 27, 1945 .

Deanna van der Velde, a representative of the Association of Jewish Refugees, will contribute to the occasion with readings, drama, music and prayers.

The public ceremony will take place on Monday, January 28, in Central Hall at the Dolphin Centre at 1pm.

The theme of this year’s ceremony is Communities Together: Build a Bridge, and will remember those who lived through the camps and were able to respect each other’s differences and the importance of communities.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony. For more information contact the council’s democratic services team on 01325-388351.
