DARLINGTON’S historic Covered Market has improved its energy efficiency performance by 20 per cent, according to latest figures.

The building has recorded a 20 per cent improvement on its 2011 performance after an inspection for its annual display energy certificate.

The market missed out on an A-rating, the most efficient score, by one point.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and local environment, said: “Given the age and structure of this iconic building, together with its multiple tenant occupation, the year-on-year improvements are to be applauded. “The results help to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to protecting the environment and of the hard work and commitment of the market team and their tenants. Well done to all involved.”

The council hopes to further improve the energy efficiency of the building by switching to LED lights for its high-usage lanterns.
